Chickens vs. Lettuce – Week 4

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 12:36 pm

The lettuce and the chickens are both ready to be moved outside.  We moved the chickens yesterday and I’ll post about that later on today.  The weather has kept the soil too wet to prepare however, so the lettuce will stay in the flat for the time being.

Here is the lettuce – a romaine-type variety called Little Gems.

This is a different flat of lettuce that was planted on the same day as the Little Gems, April 2.  This variety is a red oak leaf type called Brunia and is one of our favorites.

Here are the birds.  They are at a not very attractive stage between cute fluffy chicks and fully feathered chickens.  I’m not sure if they will live long enough to fully feather out and look like a regular chicken.

Chickens Vs. Lettuce – Week 2

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 7:01 pm

Here are the second week photos of Amy’s meat birds and her lettuce.   These photos are from last Friday – the birds are 16 days and the lettuce are 11 days.  (I mistakenly dated the lettuce last week.)

Sorry for the blurry pics.

Chickens vs. Lettuce!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 8:02 am

In the spirit of the old Godzilla vs. Some Other Monster movies I’m planning a series of posts based on the growth of chickens and lettuce.  Amy is raising some meat chickens this spring and got her first batch about 10 days ago.  She pointed out to me that the cornish cross chickens have the same growth period as a head of lettuce – about 60 days.  Here is a pic of some chicks at 8 days and lettuce at 2 days.
